What’s New!
I’m so excited with a new series Indigo. Its all about that treasured color vibration of indigo blue which created a textile explosion all over the world for centuries. Many cultures as they were being “explored” had been using a variety of plants which when harvested and cultivated, produced blue. Indigo dying was and still is used for textiles and art.
My interest in Indigo began several years ago when conducting corn husk doll workshops. I often dyed the husks so when invited to be a resident artist for the day with Enough Pie, an organization in Charleston SC which introduces art to the community, I was thrilled. One of their initiatives offers Indigo dye days and I brought corn husks to dye for demos. I was intrigued with the coloration process and the participants, young and old, made corn husk mermaids inspired more so by the greenish blue hue.
So in 2020 and 2021, I participated in Indigo dye workshops to learn more about techniques for paper and cloth. Creating and designing the textiles began to inform the art, giving shape and substance for the stories which were unfolding. I immediately saw how I could use my existing collage with fiber on structural forms offering even more creative possibilities.
Here are some images of work created so far and much more to come.
